Sakai: UvA Webklassen
In Dutch higher education, increasing attention is given to the success rate of freshman in bachelor programmes. This is because within some disciplines the drop-out rate of undergraduates in the first year is about 35%, in many cases due to wrong beliefs and assumptions about the contents of the programme. To tackle this problem, the University of Amsterdam and Edia have a developed a Sakai-based distance learning platform with open introduction courses for prospective students. In order to support the courses a number of existing Sakai tools, both core and contrib, are used. Also a new tool called the Web Course Tool was developed by Edia to support individual course lecturers to publish the course on the internet and manage the enrollments of the course.
Alane: DU CATS project
Voor het project Computer Assistentie voor Taalcompetenties van Studenten (CATS) heeft Edia een suite aan software tools ontworpen en ontwikkeld. De software is gericht op vergroting van de autonomie van taalzwakke studenten en het individualiseren en schaalbaar maken van de talige begeleiding tijdens de uitvoering van authentieke, domein specifieke, taken. Als uitgangspunt is daarbij gekozen voor taalontwikkelend vakonderwijs, een benadering waarbij het werken aan taalzwakte geïntegreerd in het vakonderwijs plaatsvindt. Primaire doelstelling van CATS was het voorkomen van uitval van studenten als gevolg van taalzwakte.
Sakai: TestweekLab
In het kader van het SurfShare programma van Surf Foundation ontwikkelde Edia in samenwerking met de vakgroep Psychologie en de bibliotheek (UB) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam het TestweekLab.
De Universiteit van Amsterdam neemt sinds eind jaren '60 een reeks psychologische tests af bij eerstejaars studenten psychologie. Inmiddels is er een enorme datacollectie ontstaan en daarmee ook behoefte om de data op een gedegen manier te ontsluiten, onderhouden en te hergebruiken. Er werd gekozen om de benodigde infrastructuur te realiseren op basis van Sakai, de bestaande leer- en samenwerkingsomgeving van UvA, en Fedora, de open source repository software. Edia werd ingeschakeld om de infrastructuur op te zetten en de integratie van beide systemen te ontwikkelen. Hiervoor ontwikkelde Edia een nieuwe Sakai tool.
TestweekLab stelt onderzoekers nu in staat om te zoeken naar relevante psychologische testdata uit de collectie van de UvA op basis van metadata. De data, inclusief SPSS-bestanden, kunnen ook worden opgevraagd en nieuwe bewerkingen met de data kunnen weer met de gemeenschap worden gedeeld.
Sakai: 'communications/resources tool'
Edia has developed a Sakai tool for Rice University in Houston, Texas. For Rice, this tool is called the Communication Tool, since they use it to distribute resources about communication developed in the CAIN project. The tool is actually a resource viewer: it selectively makes resources available in worksites. Instructors can make a subset of the resources in some central repository available to students or teaching assistants and can set availability dates for resources that should only be available for a certain period of time.
Sakai: UvA communities
Edia deploys, maintains and further develops a Sakai 2.4 instance for the Central Computing Services of the University of Amsterdam. We are currently working on migrating this instance to Sakai 2.5.
